When everyone reading this is lucky enough to use Vista you will hopefully find this insightful. The operating system is helping the completely not literate computer generation thrive. Wait to you open up Word and see all the pretty pictures. I remember when half the world used the Function keys to do stuff. Dare I say WordPerfect. (Nick don’t worry if you don’t know what that is. Function keys are the funny keys above the numbers that you never uses.) Now keyboard manufactures have to continue to put the keys there for some reason unknown to me. The next generation after me, since they cannot spell, or God forbid, spell worse than me, can use their mouse to click the happy face that will spell the words so you can graduate from college and have a degree in criminal justice. Sorry, that was not a crack at anyone; I just had to pick a major.
So I went and saw Batman today. Enjoyed it. I had read a bit and heard some about how the move was a metaphor for current events. So I was looking out for that too much, instead of just enjoying the flick. But I saw what I was looking for. There were one or two jumps that needed some explanation but whatever, it is a movie. I really like the fact that all the characters have their flaws. People screw up. People make hard choices. It is not fair. There is good and evil, and sometimes good people screw up. Sometimes good people get mad. Sometimes good people are bad. Sometimes, people come through.
I want to stop for a quick second and go on one of my famous rampages to express a bit of anger at the total lack of movie theater eticit left in the world. What the hell is going on. When I saw Saving Private Ryan next to an eight year old , for me that was the beginning of a total disconnect in the world about what it mean to live in a community (at least in a theater). It is worse in Dubai. People, shut the fuck up and turn off your mobile. Not only did it ring, it was that standard ring, the one that when you hear it means that you suck. We watched a full minute of please silence your cell phone and all that good stuff. And dude, shut up. You are like 10 seats away and I can tell you are speaking Arabic.
But on the other hand, I choose my seat, I was personally escorted to it. And, this is a true statement, the floor looked so clean I actually put my palm down on it. I put my hand on the floor or a movie theater. It was like a kitchen counter top. Put those two together and you have a movie theater in Dubai.
I missed the entire opening ceremonies. I just saw a quick high light in Arabic and it looked rad. The guy running in the sky. The time zone thing for me is what it is, I am four hours behind Beijing. I will see what kind of coverage I get. Not seeing it live will be OK as long as I see the great moments. I have Olympic Fever. I don’t want to talk about politics. I want to talk about sports. I want to see the greatness of competition bring out the best in us and I want to see people achieve more than they know they could. I want to see what I have seen in the past. I want to cry at the glory. No politics. I can’t wait for the one person who comes out of nowhere and takes it all. The one Croatian or that one Peruvian who shows up and just wants it more. And they get it. Can’t wait.
A few new movies on the Tube are up. Enjoy.
